Not every rooftop tent lives on a roof. One of the fastest-growing setups in Australian touring is mounting the tent on a camper trailer or off-road trailer - and there's a lot to like about it.
Why a trailer setup works so well
- Your 4x4 stays free. No permanent weight on the roof means better fuel economy and handling on the daily commute, and full roof space for kayaks or bikes when you want it.
- Camp stays set up. Unhitch the trailer at camp and your bedroom stays put while you explore, do the school run to the beach, or duck into town for supplies.
- Lower is easier. Trailer height puts the tent at a comfortable level - easier ladder access for kids, easier setup and pack-down for everyone.
- Dynamic ratings rarely limit you. Most off-road trailer racks carry generous load ratings, so tent weight is far less of a constraint than on a vehicle roof. (New to load ratings? Start here.)
What to check before mounting
Three things: the trailer rack's dynamic rating for towing (corrugations punish trailers even harder than vehicles, so a robust, load-rated rack matters), the rack's static rating for occupants at camp, and bar spacing compatible with your tent's mounting channels.
