Every rooftop tent needs something to sit on - and for most buyers the choice comes down to two crossbars or a full platform rack. Both work. The right answer depends on your vehicle, your budget and what else you carry.
The 2-bar (crossbar) setup
Two load-rated crossbars are the simplest and most affordable way to mount a rooftop tent. Hard-shell tents like the Roof Space 2 are engineered to distribute their weight across two bars, and at 66.6 kg the RS2 leaves useful payload headroom within most vehicles' dynamic roof ratings. Crossbars are lighter than a platform, quieter at highway speed, cheaper, and quicker to fit and remove.
Best for: SUVs and wagons, daily drivers that only wear the tent on weekends, and anyone keeping the build simple.
The platform rack
A full-length platform (think Rhino-Rack Pioneer-style trays) spreads load across more mounting points, which typically means a higher dynamic rating and rock-solid support off-road. The big win is real estate: alongside the tent you can mount an awning, recovery boards, jerry can holders, solar and lighting. On utes, platform-style tub racks are the go-to way to carry a tent over the tray - see why in our Hilux, Ranger & Amarok mounting guide.
Best for: serious tourers, corrugated-road travel, utes and 4x4s running multiple roof accessories.
What actually matters
- Dynamic load rating. Bars or platform, the rack's dynamic rating must exceed the tent's weight. Confused about dynamic vs static? Read this first.
- Bar spread. Check the tent manufacturer's minimum and maximum bar spacing - the RS2's mounting channels give plenty of flexibility.
- Vehicle limit. The vehicle's own roof rating is the ceiling, regardless of how strong the rack is. Our fitment tool and car compatibility pages list roof loads by model.
- Weight creep. A platform can weigh 20-30 kg itself - that comes out of your available roof load before the tent goes on.
The short answer
If it's just a tent on an SUV: quality crossbars are all you need. If you're building a touring rig, running a ute, or adding accessories: go platform. Either way, the lightweight Roof Space 2 keeps your options open.
